When discussing fire service proficiency, the first thing that comes to mind is the most fundamental piece of safety equipment that is used daily, the self-contained breathing apparatus. Unfortunately, for some, it is easy to become complacent in the use of this most essential tool. Over many years, the staff of the Virginia Beach Fire Academy has developed a course called SCBA Week. Many instructors who have come before me were instrumental in beginning this program. Current staffs have developed additional props and scenarios and improved on others. Our department has been very fortunate to have the resources and the support of the administrative staff to conduct a very thorough academy. The course is designed to be delivered to new recruits assigned to the fire academy. It is widely said that after successful completion of this weeklong course, the recruit firefighter will be able to teach a course on SCBA operations himself.
